What: Apprenticeship Awards Cymru (AAC)

The background:

We have worked with the Welsh Government and the Skills, Higher Education and Lifelong Learning (SHELL) department since 2019, helping them to host the Apprenticeship Awards Cymru (AAC). Due to the pandemic the events have been a mix of virtual, in person and hybrid. However due to the success of the hybrid event in 2021, and with the budget efficiency this allowed, the 2022 awards followed the same pattern.

The Apprenticeship Awards Cymru rewards individuals, learning providers, and employers who have excelled in contributing to the development of the Welsh Government’s Employability and Apprenticeship Programmes across Wales. These awards showcase and celebrate the achievements of those who have exceeded expectations and shown a dynamic approach to training, demonstrated initiative and enterprise, innovation and creativity, and shown an understanding of, and commitment to, the improvement of skills development for the Welsh economy.

  

Our aim:

Our aim with the event was two-fold. Firstly to set up and run the streaming element without technical glitches from our studio and secondly, aiming to provide an engaging, high quality entertainment experience for those present at the screening element of the awards.

 

Our experience:

Hosting award ceremonies can be nerve-wracking for those involved, even more so with two sites being managed simultaneously. At Genero Productions we look to alleviate as much of the stress as possible. We know the versatility that is needed for any ‘on-the-day’ issues and we know how to resolve them without any impediment to the event itself. We keep the client informed of the issues that arise throughout the planning and production phase so that they feel consulted and in control.

 

The event itself:

Hosted by BBC presenter, Eleri Siôn, and a virtual address given by Vaughan Gething, Minister for the Economy of Wales, the event was produced across two sites: Mercure Holland House Hotel, Cardiff and Studio G and the Genero Group Head Office. At Holland House 60 VIPs, sponsors and stakeholders attended a dinner where the awards were screened for them to watch.  Studio G at Genero Group Head Office was where the event was hosted, filmed and live streamed from.

The Genero team were masterfully able to set up the two which included additional Wi-Fi boosters for high-speed streaming and a green screen for Studio G.

This live event also required more post production than the usual virtual event. The event filming was to be edited, translated and transcribed for sub-titling, ready for hosting on the Welsh Government’s AAC website. 

The Results

In person guests were treated to wonderful VIP hospitality and whilst partly virtual, the live hosting and announcing of winners in real-time kept the drama and excitement running throughout the awards.

The event was a great success with Willow Daycare winning Small and Medium Employer of the Year, Persimmon Homes West Wales winning Large and Macro Employer of the Year and Keira Dwyer of Pontypridd winning Apprentice of the Year. 

We were thrilled at Genero Productions at how seamlessly the event ran but also how this event successfully demonstrated how hybrid events are evolving, even beyond the role of necessity because of the pandemic.
